Motorhome RV vs. Towable RV

A Winnebago Journey parked by the side of a road by the ocean.

When you are RV shopping, the most difficult part of the process is figuring out which one is right for you, and the first step is learning whether you want a motorhome or towable RV. Each one comes with its benefits, and our RCD RV dealership is ready to help you determine what RV type best fits your needs.

Motorhome RVs For Sale Near Me

Our motorhome RVs for sale are self-propelled, meaning the RV itself is all you need to start your next adventure. They come in three different classes; A, B, and C:

  • Class A motorhomes are more similar to buses or commercial trucks, being made using a similar chassis.
  • Class B motorhomes use a similar premise, but use the framework of a large van.
  • Class C motorhomes are constructed using a commercial chassis with an attached cab section, giving them their unique look.
    • There are also “Super C” motorhomes, built using more heavy duty chassis like a Ford F-550 or a commercial class truck.

Among the three classes of Motohome RVs, Class A is the largest and Class B is the smallest, so it’s important to keep their blueprints and floor plan in mind when determining what features and amenities you wish your RV to have. Additionally, upkeep for a motorhome includes keeping the motorized portions of your vehicle up to snuff, so it’s even more important not to skip on your routine maintenance. Each motorhome also uses either diesel or gasoline fuel, with diesel engines being more expensive but typically requiring less maintenance, while gasoline engines have greater horsepower and a lower base cost.

Towable RVs For Sale Near Me

Towable RVs are hitched to other vehicles and driven around. Because they lack motorized components, you don't need to worry about upkeep on any of those parts to take it on a trip, however, that means your RV is reliant on another vehicle to move it.

The different types of towable RVs include travel trailers, toy haulers, fifth wheels, and destination trailers:

  • Travel trailers are typically larger than other towable RVs, but can range from 10 to 40 feet long. They’re designed to hold furniture and contain enough space with high enough ceilings to stand in.
  • Toy haulers are for transporting “toys”, like kayaks or bicycles, while also sporting extra cargo space and features for easier offloading. Some toy haulers can also be considered fifth wheels or travel trailers depending on the size of the items you intend to haul.
  • Fifth wheels are the largest of the towable RV types, but require a full-size truck to tow because of their proportions. Compared to other trailer types, fifth wheels are typically easier to tow, as they use a kingpin hitch that pulls them forward into the truck bed instead of being pulled behind on the rear bumper.
  • Destination trailers are relatively large trailers that are intended to be hauled to a location and then parked for extended periods of time. They’re not exactly designed for frequent hauling, but can be the most useful for longer stays or vacations in a single place.
